Bruce Wootten - guided flounder trips The AreaChincoteague is known as a fishing town and family oriented vacation resort. The island has sheltered bays, long winding creeks, and is in close proximity to the beach and national park on Assateague Island. There are areas to fish from shore or piers, facilities to launch a boat, numerous charter boats, and family attractions. This is an excellent area for flounder fishing, offshore fishing, crabbing, clamming and many opportunities. Local FishThe area is known for excellent fishing for dozens of species of fish. Inshore, flounder, sea trout, bluefish, rockfish, spot, croaker, sheepshead, triggerfish, red drum, black drum, sea bass, small sharks and tautog are all possibilities. Farther offshore, anglers have opportunities for monster bluefish, mako and other sharks, bluefin, yellowfin and albacore tuna, king mackerel, dolphinfish, wahoo, billfish and others. SeasonsFishing in the area gets in gear when flounder arrive in the spring. The coastal waters hold fish almost year round with a variety of options when the weather allows. As the waters begin to warm, flounder, croakers and other inshore fish begin to enter the area. By early summer, offshore fishing is in full swing. Offshore, anglers can fish for big game fish along the 20 and 30 fathom curves and on out to Poor Man's, Washington and Norfolk Canyons where tuna, billfish and other species are commonly caught. Autumn brings a focus on species such as bluefish, sea bass, tautog and striped bass or "rockfish". RegulationsAlways check local regulations for specific fishing information on recreational fishing. Anglers that charter a boat can consult their captain beforehand for the latest in requirements. Related Pages
