Located in northwest Baltimore County, Prettyboy Reservoir is Maryland’s second largest freshwater reservoir (1500 acres). The impoundment was created by damming Big Gunpowder Falls in 1932.

The reservoir and its surrounding watershed is served by a consortium of agencies including Baltimore County Department of Environmental Protection and Resource Management, the Prettyboy Watershed Alliance, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Baltimore City Reservoir Natural Resources Office, Carroll County Department of Planning, and Baltimore, Carroll and York County Soil Conservation Districts.

Several miles downstream, Big Gunpowder Falls is dammed a second time to create Loch Raven Reservoir. Below Loch Raven Reservoir, the Gunpowder River continues unrestricted to the Chesapeake Bay.
