The wind-on ballyhoo rig is extremely effective for catching tuna and other offshore fish. There are many variations, depending on the species and conditions.
In situations where the bite is slow and fish seem finicky, wind-on ballyhoo rigs can literally make the difference between catching fish or going home without a bite.
The lightest variant uses no lure, only a naked ballyhoo rigged using 20 feet of #80 mono, a 7/0 hook and a small swivel that can pass thru the rod tip. The rig uses a chin weight like the basic rig, and a rubber band or piece of monel to secure the bait.
