Lake Gaston is one of a series of man-made impoundments along the mid-section of the Roanoke River. The lake receives water from Kerr Lake. Lake Gaston’s outflow enters into Roanoke Rapids Lake.
The lake is a popular destination for fishing, boating, paddling, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, and other watersports. Because of the its location and attractions, Lake Gaston is surrounded by vacation and retirement homes. Public access for launching boats and other watercraft is available at public facilities as well as private marinas.
Lake Gaston Fishing
Lake Gaston sustains a wide range of fish species, including sportfish, forage fish, and migratory species. Sportfish species including largemouth bass, striped bass, black crappie, white crappie, sunfish, blue catfish, flathead catfish, channel catfish, bullheads, white perch, yellow perch, and walleye.
The lake’s sportfish feed on several forage fish species including alewife, blueback herring, gizzard shad, and threadfin shad. In addition to its year-round populations of fish, the lake is visited by migratory fish species. Due in part to recent restoration efforts, both American shad and American eels are able to move through the impoundment as they undertake season migrations.
